Bernard of Clairvaux: Mystic and Church Reformer

Early Life and Vocation

Bernard of Clairvaux, a French mystic and church reformer, was born into a noble family in 1090. Inspired by his mother's piety and the teachings of the Canons Regular, he renounced worldly pleasures and entered the Cistercian monastery of Cîteaux in 1113.

Founding of Clairvaux

In 1115, Bernard founded the Abbey of Clairvaux, where he became abbot. Under his leadership, Clairvaux became a center of strict monastic discipline and spiritual renewal. Bernard's emphasis on poverty and asceticism earned him a reputation for unwavering devotion.

Influence on Monasticism

Bernard's writings and sermons played a significant role in shaping monastic life. He promoted the Cistercian Rule as a model of austerity and theological purity. While he acknowledged the value of different monastic orders, he asserted the superiority of the Cistercian way.

Church Reform

Bernard also extended his influence beyond monasticism. He actively intervened in church affairs, calling for reform and defending ecclesiastical authority. He played a pivotal role in the resolution of the papal schism of 1130, supporting Pope Innocent II.

Fight Against Heresy and the Second Crusade

Bernard's zeal for the faith led him to vehemently oppose heresy. He denounced the teachings of Arnold of Brescia and Peter Abelard, believing them to subvert the authority of the church. He also played a major part in organizing the Second Crusade, despite the pope's initial reservations.

Spiritual Thought and Mysticism

Bernard's theological writings and sermons reveal his deep mystical spirituality. He emphasized the importance of love for God, seeing it as the path to salvation. In his commentary on the Song of Songs, he explored the intimate relationship between God and the soul.

Papal Guidance

In his influential treatise "De Consideratione," Bernard provided guidance to Pope Eugene III, emphasizing the importance of unity, humility, and spiritual leadership. He argued that the pope should rule through wisdom rather than force, using both the temporal and spiritual swords.

Legacy

Bernard of Clairvaux died in 1153 and was canonized in 1174. His teachings and influence continue to shape Christianity today. He is celebrated as a spiritual master, a tireless advocate for reform, and a champion of the faith.
