Early Life and Football CareerBernard Lama, born in French Guiana, began his professional football career in France. He made his debut in 1993 for the French national team in a match against Israel, subsequently becoming the primary goalkeeper. Lama's most notable achievements include participating in the 1996 and 2000 European Championships and the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where France emerged victorious. He contributed significantly to the nation's success by winning the World Cup and the European Championship.
International Recognition and Setback
Lama's career flourished until a doping scandal in 1997 led to his temporary suspension. This setback paved the way for Fabien Barthez to take over as France's first-choice goalkeeper. Lama retired from playing in 2001 after a successful career with Paris Saint-Germain.
