Bernardo Zendrini: A Venetian Engineer and Hydrographer

Early Life and Education

Bernardo Zendrini was born in Venice and received his early education from the Jesuits. In 1701, he enrolled at the University of Padua, where he earned degrees in philosophy and medicine.

Scientific Interests and Collaborations

From a young age, Zendrini exhibited a keen interest in mathematics and its practical applications. He became part of a circle of scholars in Padua and Venice in the early 18th century. Inspired by Descartes' analytical geometry and Leibniz's calculus, Zendrini specialized in hydrography and hydraulic engineering.

Hydrography and Hydraulic Works

In 1717, Zendrini defended Ferrara against a proposal to redirect the waters of the Rhine River into the Po River. He carried out numerous hydraulic projects throughout Italy and was renowned for his theoretical research on hydrodynamics, particularly the speed of flowing water and river erosion.

The Venetian Lagoon

Zendrini played a pivotal role as an expert on the Venetian Lagoon. His 1736 work on the lagoon remains a valuable source of information about its condition. He also designed fortifications to protect Venice from maritime threats.

"Leggi e fenomeni, regolazioni ed usi delle acque correnti"

In this seminal work published in 1747, Zendrini presented his findings on river behavior and the general laws of water flow. He drew on differential and integral calculus, algebra, and geometry to investigate the speed of currents, the confluence and divergence of rivers, river obstacles, flood control, and the utilization of water power.

Consulting and Construction

Zendrini was sought after as a consultant and traveled extensively throughout Italy and abroad (including Vienna). He resided in Venice, where he oversaw the construction of city quays from 1744 onward.

Legacy

Bernardo Zendrini died in Venice in 1747 and was laid to rest in the Jesuit church. His groundbreaking work in hydrography and hydraulic engineering continues to be recognized and studied to this day.
