Ben Croon: Dutch Rower and Footballer
Born on May 11, 1886, in Amsterdam, Ben Croon was the second child of Bernardus Hermanus Croon and Frouwkje Catharina de Vries. His father founded the electrical engineering company "Croon & Co." in 1876.
Football Career
At the age of sixteen, Croon joined the football club "Ajax." He also became a referee for the Amsterdam Football Association in 1903. By 1905, he was playing for Ajax's first team, which competed in the Dutch second division. Croon remained a member of Ajax until August 1912. He later joined the club AFC, but eventually returned to Ajax's reserve team.
Rowing Achievements
In addition to football, Croon was a skilled rower and a member of the "Amstel" club. He was part of the Dutch quadruple sculls crew at the 1908 London Olympics. Although his team lost their only race to Great Britain, they shared third place and earned bronze medals.
Personal Life
Following in his father's footsteps, Croon worked in the electrical engineering field. He was married twice, first to Carolina Sophia Legel, with whom he had three children, and later to Susanna Geradina Emma Tetthof in 1944.
