British Olympic Rowing Legend: A Life on the Water

Ran Laurie was born into a family of boat builders in Wargrave, England. He followed in his family's footsteps, becoming an engineer in their shipyard.

Wartime Service

During World War II, Laurie served on torpedo boats and participated in the evacuation of Dunkirk.

Rowing Triumphs

In 1947, Laurie won both the Wingfield Sculls and Diamond Sculls competitions. However, he was not selected to compete in the single sculls at the 1948 London Olympics. Instead, he teamed up with Richard Burnell and won gold in the double sculls event.

Post-Olympic Career

After the Olympics, Laurie retired from rowing and returned to the family business. He became a successful boat builder. In 1980, he sold the business and moved to Portugal, where he enjoyed playing golf and squash.

Return to England

In 1988, after the death of his wife, Laurie returned to England. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 88.
