Betsy Palmer, born Patricia Betsy Hrunek on November 1, 1926, in East Chicago, Indiana, was an American actress known for her roles in the television game show "I've Got a Secret" and as Pamela Voorhees in the slasher film series "Friday the 13th".

Early Life

Betsy Palmer was the daughter of Mary Love, the founder of Chicago Business College, and Rudolph Vincent Hrunek, a chemical engineer and immigrant from Czechoslovakia. She attended DePaul University, where she studied theater arts.

Palmer married Dr. Vincent Merendino on May 8, 1954. They had a daughter named Missy in 1962 but divorced in 1971.

Acting Career

Palmer began her acting career in 1951 when she joined the cast of the soap opera "Miss Susan" in Philadelphia. She was discovered for the role while attending a party at actor Frank Sutton's apartment. Shortly after, she moved to New York City.

As a lifetime member of The Actors Studio, Palmer performed in theatrical productions across the southern Pacific, portraying Nellie Forbush. She played the lead role in the 1953 musical version of "What Every Woman Knows" called "Maggie".

Palmer gained recognition on television as a regular panelist on the game show "I've Got a Secret", replacing Faye Emerson in 1958 and remaining on the show until its conclusion in 1967. She was the only surviving original cast member of the show.

She starred as Carol Lee Phillips in the drama "Queen Bee" with Joan Crawford in 1955 and appeared in the western film "The Tin Star" with Henry Fonda in 1957. In 1958, Palmer played secret agent Phyllis Carter/Lynn Stuart in the crime drama "The True Story of Lynn Stuart" alongside Jack Lord.

Despite initially having reservations about appearing in a horror film, Palmer accepted a role in the slasher film "Friday the 13th" for the need of a new car. The film became a cult classic and helped revive Palmer's career. She later reprised her role as Pamela Voorhees in the sequel "Friday the 13th Part 2".

Later Career and Legacy

Palmer's role in "Friday the 13th" remained one of the most memorable in her career. In 2006, a documentary titled "Betsy Palmer: A Scream Queen Legend" was released, showcasing her career in theater, film, and television. She declined an offer to reprise her role in the horror crossover film "Freddy vs. Jason" in 2003 due to a low salary offer.

Throughout her career, Palmer appeared in various television shows and films, including soap operas like "As the World Turns" and "Knots Landing". She also performed in stage productions, such as "On Golden Pond" in 1997.

Betsy Palmer passed away on May 29, 2015, from natural causes at a hospice in Danbury, Connecticut. She left a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry and received the "Major Award" from the New England Theatre Conference in 2005 for her contributions to theater.
