Beverly Roberts: A Hollywood Starlet's Journey
Early Life and Career BeginningsBeverly Roberts was born on May 19, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York. She embarked on her entertainment career as a nightclub performer. In 1935, a Warner Brothers talent scout noticed her striking beauty and stage presence.
Hollywood Stardom
In 1936, Roberts signed with Warner Brothers and made her film debut in "The Singing Kid." Her breakout role came opposite Humphrey Bogart in "Two Against the World." She continued to star in leading roles throughout the late 1930s, including "God's Country and the Woman" with George Brent.
Shifting Focus and Friendships
By 1940, Warner Brothers shifted their focus to other actresses, leaving Roberts without steady film work. She returned to singing and cabaret. During her time in Hollywood, she befriended Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Pat O'Brien, and George Jessel. She also formed a close bond with Errol Flynn.
Post-Hollywood Life
In 1954, Roberts returned to New York and became the executive director of the Theater Authority. She retired in 1977 and moved to Laguna Niguel, California. During her retirement, she pursued watercolor painting. She shared a residence with actress Winnie Gibson until Gibson's passing in 1987.
Later Years and Legacy
Roberts appeared in the 2000 documentary "I Used to Be in Pictures," reflecting on her past in Hollywood. She died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Laguna Niguel on July 13, 2009, at the age of 95.
