Thailand's Prince of Motor Racing
Early Life and EducationBirabongse Bhanubandh, also known as Prince Bira of Siam, was born into royalty in Thailand. In 1927, he traveled to England to pursue his education at Eton College and Cambridge University.
White Mouse Racing
In 1935, Prince Bira and his cousin, Prince Chula Chakrabongse, co-founded the White Mouse Racing team. They purchased several ERA race cars and entered various Grand Prix events.
Grand Prix Success
Prince Bira achieved early success in motor racing, winning four races in 1936. He also finished 3rd at the Brooklands Double Twelve and 5th at the Donington Grand Prix.
Career Struggles
After 1936, White Mouse Racing faced challenges with its cars becoming less competitive. Financial constraints further hindered their efforts, and Prince Bira often had to race with outdated machinery.
Post-War Return
Following World War II, Prince Bira returned to racing, winning the 1947 Grand Prix de Frontières in Chimay. He also competed in Argentina, where he finished 2nd to Juan Manuel Fangio at Mar del Plata.
Final Victory and Retirement
In 1955, Prince Bira won his final race at the New Zealand Grand Prix in Ardmore. Shortly after, he made the surprising decision to retire from racing.
Later Years
After retiring from motor racing, Prince Bira returned to Thailand and pursued business interests. He later settled in Switzerland and supported Thai athletes. In his final years, he lived in England and passed away in London in 1985.
