Early Life and CareerBill Cosby is a famous American actor, director, producer, writer, musician, and political activist. He gained widespread popularity in the 1960s with the television series "I Spy." Cosby is a veteran stand-up comedian and has released several of his own television shows. In 1969, he created "The Bill Cosby Show," which aired until 1971. In the 1980s, he became the creator of "The Cosby Show," one of the most successful comedy projects of the decade. Cosby appeared in the show wearing Christmas sweaters, which became popular in the 1980s. He has also starred in several films, including "The Wiz" (1974), "Leonard Part 6" (1987), "Ghost Dad" (1990), "Jack" (1996), and "Comic" (2002), as well as in numerous commercials. From 1996 to 2000, Cosby starred in the television series "Cosby" and made appearances in several movies. His amiable fatherly image made him popular among Americans, earning him the nickname "America's Dad." In 1976, Cosby received a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Massachusetts. Throughout his career as an actor and musician, he has been awarded multiple Emmys, Golden Globes, and Grammys, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2002, researcher Molefi Kete Asante included Bill Cosby in the list of the 100 most outstanding African Americans.
Sexual Scandal and Imprisonment
In 2014, Cosby became embroiled in a scandal. In 2015, he was charged with committing a sexual offense in January 2004 at a mansion near Philadelphia, where he drugged a woman before assaulting her. Over 50 women came forward, accusing Cosby of similar acts of sexual misconduct. The alleged incidents spanned from 1965 to 2008 in ten U.S. states and one Canadian province. In his testimony, Cosby admitted to engaging in consensual sex with multiple young women using the sedative drug Quaaludes, and admitted that obtaining the prescription for the drug was illegal.
On May 3, 2018, Cosby, along with Roman Polanski, was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for sexual misconduct. On September 26, 2018, Cosby was sentenced to three to ten years in prison.
On June 23, 2020, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that Cosby could appeal his conviction, citing the biased nature of the victim testimonies. The court agreed to review his appeal regarding the admissibility of five accuser testimonies and the inclusion of Cosby's admission of giving Quaaludes to other women in the past. The court also agreed to examine whether the former prosecutor informed Cosby that he would not be prosecuted for the assault, leading Cosby to testify in a civil lawsuit against him. On June 30, 2021, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned Cosby's conviction, stating that the charges on which he was convicted were based on testimonies that were part of a deal between the actor and the prosecution, making their use unlawful. Cosby was released from prison.
Personal Life
On January 25, 1964, Bill Cosby married Camille Olivia Hanks, and they have five children together: Erika, Erinn, Ensa, Evin, and Ennis. Their only son, Ennis, was killed in 1997 at the age of 27. He was murdered by an 18-year-old named Mikhail Markhasev. Their daughter Ensa passed away on February 26, 2018, at the age of 44 due to kidney disease. Cosby and his wife also have three grandchildren.
