Guerin gained recognition in 1989 when he was selected by the New Jersey Devils as the 5th overall pick in the National Hockey League draft. For the first two years, he worked hard and rarely saw ice time. However, in the 1992-1993 season, Guerin made his way into the team's main lineup and quickly made an impact with 14 goals.

As his experience grew, Guerin established himself as a leader in the team, consistently scoring goals and making assists. He won his first Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in the following season. He then joined the Edmonton Oilers, where he had a successful run, with the 1998-1999 season being particularly noteworthy as he scored 30 goals and made several assists.

Guerin later played for the Boston Bruins, where he continued to excel, scoring more than 20 goals in his first season and doubling that number in the next. Despite his success, Guerin decided to leave the team and signed a five-year contract with the Dallas Stars. However, luck was not on his side, and the team bought out the remainder of his contract in 2006.

Following this setback, Guerin signed a contract with the St. Louis Blues and quickly proved that his career was far from over. In his first season, he scored around 30 goals and made 47 assists, earning him the title of Most Valuable Player of the Year in the All-Star game. Guerin then joined the San Jose Sharks, where his performance was not as outstanding, but he remained a solid player for the team.

In 2007, Guerin reached a significant milestone, playing his 1000th game and becoming the 214th player to achieve this feat. He later joined the New York Islanders and was appointed captain, but despite his efforts, the team failed to make the playoffs. As a result, Guerin was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins after two seasons.

The Penguins initially had doubts about Guerin's role in the team but ultimately decided to keep him. He proved his worth in the playoffs by scoring the winning goal against the Philadelphia Flyers. Although he knew he was nearing the end of his career, Guerin extended his contract for one more year. However, he could not replicate his previous year's success.

In 2010, Guerin briefly joined the Philadelphia Flyers' training camp, but the team lost interest in him. On December 6, 2010, he announced his retirement, ranking 7th in the National Hockey League's list of top scorers with 429 goals.

Off the ice, Guerin is married to Kara Guerin, and they have four children together: Kayla, Grace, Liam, and Lexi Rose.
