Otto Messmer, an American animator, was renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of animation.
Early Career and Rubber Hose Animation
Messmer's innovative use of "rubber hose" animation, characterized by the fluid and exaggerated movements of cartoon characters, established him as a pioneer in the industry. He perfected this style while animating the character Felix the Cat for Margaret Winkler from 1925 to 1927.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
From 1929 to 1934, Messmer brought his talents to the Walter Lantz studio, where he animated, wrote, and directed the popular cartoon character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. His work on this series further refined his signature rubber hose style.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "The Captain and the Kids"
After leaving the Lantz studio, Messmer joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1936, where he worked on the animated series "The Captain and the Kids," based on the comic strip "The Katzenjammer Kids." His contributions to this series continued to showcase his skill in creating memorable and expressive cartoon characters.
