Biography of Bob Barker
Bob Barker was an American television actor, creator, and host of popular television projects. He worked in television for over fifty years and retired in 2007. Barker was born on December 12, 1923, in Washington, United States. He spent most of his youth in Dakota. His mother was a school teacher, and his father was an electrician, a chief of important high-voltage lines. One day, Barker's father fell from a great height and died. This happened in 1929, leaving six-year-old Bob without paternal care. Later, Barker's mother remarried and gave birth to Bob's stepbrother. In 1931, the family moved to Springfield, Missouri, where Barker, as a seventeen-year-old teenager, graduated from Central High School. Afterward, Barker enrolled at Drury College (now a university), where he not only studied diligently but also excelled in basketball, playing for the institution's team. When World War II began, Barker had to interrupt his education. He joined the military and served in the Navy. After the war, Bob returned to his alma mater and continued his education. He soon graduated and was awarded an honorary degree in economics. Afterward, the future actor went to Florida, where he worked in radio for a long time. Eventually, he started performing in a show in Los Angeles. Barker's show began in 1956 and lasted until 1975. It was a quiz show mixed with game elements, tricks, and other incredibly interesting acting elements. Bob was truly an innovator and original. For example, in October 1987, he completely refused to dye his own gray hair (as was customary), and since then, his gray head could often be seen on TV. Bob's personal life consisted of his only official spouse, Dorothy Jo Gideon, with whom Barker lived for 36 years, until Dorothy's last day (she died in 1981 from lung cancer).
