Biography of Bob Kalsu

Early Life and Football Career

Bob Kalsu, an American football player and military veteran, was born on April 13, 1945, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He excelled as an offensive tackle for the University of Oklahoma football team and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League (AFL) in the eighth round in 1968. Kalsu began his professional career with the Bills as a defensive lineman.

Rookie of the Year

In his first season, Kalsu was immediately named the "Rookie of the Year" for the Buffalo Bills. Billy Shaw, the left guard of the team, described Kalsu as a talented player with strong legs, excellent blocking skills, and a great work ethic. Kalsu's dedication and commitment to the game were evident both on and off the field.

The Call of Duty

When Kalsu learned about the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, which required athletes, he decided to join the army. Despite the ongoing Vietnam War, his friends tried to dissuade him, citing his wife and child. However, Kalsu was determined to fulfill his duty. He enlisted as a second lieutenant and arrived in Vietnam in November 1969, serving as part of the 101st Airborne Division.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

Tragically, Kalsu lost his life in combat on July 21, 1970. During an enemy mortar attack on the "Ripcord" fire support base near A Shau Valley, Kalsu's unit came under heavy fire. Kalsu, who was only 25 years old, made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Out of respect for Kalsu, his family chose not to disclose the details surrounding his death.

A Father's Legacy

Kalsu left behind a daughter named Jill, and he was eagerly awaiting news of the birth of his second child. On July 23, 1970, his wife, Jan Kalsu, gave birth to a son named Robert Todd Kalsu at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. A young lieutenant was tasked with delivering the devastating news of Bob's death to Jan. Overwhelmed with grief, Jan changed their son's name to James Robert Kalsu Jr.

Remembering Bob Kalsu

In honor of Bob Kalsu, a forward operating base in Iraq was named FOB Kalsu in Babil. In 1997, "NFL Films" released a documentary about Kalsu, which was nominated for an Emmy Award. In 2000, the Buffalo Bills added Kalsu's name to their Wall of Fame. Additionally, the football stadium at Del City High School was named in his honor.
