George Robert "Bob" Newhart, born in Chicago in 1929, is an American actor known for his comedic style of "phone conversation" skits. His television roles in the series "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart" received nominations for seven Golden Globe Awards and four Emmy Awards. Bob Newhart's name is included in the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.
Early Life and Career
After serving in the army, a young man named Bob Newhart worked as a simple accountant at an advertising agency while pursuing amateur theater in Chicago. Alongside his friend Ed Gallagher, Bob recorded long phone conversations in the form of radio shows for entertainment. Eventually, Gallagher grew tired of this activity, but Newhart created an entertainment "phone" act based on these recordings, which brought him fame.
In 1959, Newhart was introduced to a representative from Warner Bros. Records, who immediately signed a contract with him. This marked the start of his variety show, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart." His comedy album soared to the top of the popularity charts, and soon tickets to Newhart's performances at theaters, clubs, and venues were sold out.
Television and Film Success
Newhart's success caught the attention of television executives, and his first foray into television was his own show, "The Bob Newhart Show." This resulted in a Peabody Award and an Emmy Award. Starting from 1970, Bob Newhart began appearing in films, starring in movies such as Vincente Minnelli's "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever," Walter Bernstein's "Little Miss Marker," and Buck Henry's "First Family." He worked alongside acclaimed actors such as Barbara Streisand, Walter Matthau, and Gilda Radner.
In 1982, Newhart returned to CBS with the show "Newhart," which, similar to his previous series, achieved immense success. During this period, he appeared on television in projects such as "Larry King Live," "Saturday Night Live," "The Judy Garland Show," "The Andy Williams Show," "Biography," "Murphy Brown," "The Simpsons," "Bob," and many others. Additionally, Bob Newhart starred in the two-hour autobiographical film "A&E Biography."
Recent Work
In 1995, Newhart released his first personal video recording of classic sketches from his "phone" routines. At the same time, Newhart continues to perform concerts worldwide, which are highly popular with audiences.
One of Newhart's recent works is the film series "The Librarian," directed by Jonathan Frakes. He appeared in all three installments - "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear" (2004), "The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines" (2006), and "The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice" (2008).
