Biography of Bohdan Zadura

Bohdan Zadura is a Polish poet, prose writer, essayist, and translator. He is known for his translations from Russian, Ukrainian, English, and Hungarian. Zadura completed his studies at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw. He made his debut as a poet in 1962.

In the 1970s, Zadura worked at a provincial museum and was in charge of the literary department of a theater in Lublin. He was closely associated with the magazines Akcent, Literatura na świecie, and Twórczość, and has been the chief editor of the latter since 2004.

Initially, Zadura's poetry leaned towards neoclassicism, influenced by poets like J.M. Rymkiewicz and E. Sito. However, he later underwent a shift in style, characterized by the demythologization of historical memory and a focus on the everyday world with its randomness and unpredictability. This new style is evident in his collections "Old Acquaintances" (1986) and "Silence" (1994).

Zadura has also translated the works of poets such as J. Ashbery and M. Babich. From Ukrainian, he has translated poetry by Dmytro Pavlychko, Natalka Bilotserkivets, Yuri Andrukhovych, Serhiy Zhadan, Andriy Bondar, Halyna Kruk, Vasyl Makhno, Andriy Lyubka, Liubov Yakymchuk, and Ostap Slyvynsky.
