Early Life and Education

Born and raised in southwestern Nigeria, Bola Tinubu later moved to the United States, where he earned a degree in Accounting from Chicago State University. He returned to Nigeria in the early 1980s and worked as an accountant for Mobil Nigeria.

Political Activism

Tinubu entered politics as a senatorial candidate for Lagos West under the Social Democratic Party in 1992. After President Sani Abacha dissolved the Senate in 1993, he became an activist advocating for democracy as part of the National Democratic Coalition movement. Forced to flee the country in 1994, Tinubu returned in 1998 when Abacha's death initiated the transition to the Fourth Nigerian Republic.

Governor of Lagos State

In 1999, Tinubu won a landslide victory as Governor of Lagos State as a member of the Alliance for Democracy. He was re-elected for a second term four years later. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize Lagos and his rivalry with the People's Democratic Party-controlled federal government.

Formation of the All Progressives Congress

After leaving office in 2007, Tinubu played a key role in establishing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013. His long and controversial political career has been punctuated by allegations of corruption and questions about the veracity of his personal history.

Presidency (2023 - Present)

Tinubu was sworn in as President of Nigeria on May 29, 2023, after winning the presidential election in March. His government is widely seen as having overcome legal challenges from the opposition and enjoys international legitimacy.

Personal Life

Tinubu married Oluremi Tinubu in 1987. They have three children: Zainab Abisola Tinubu, Habibat Tinubu, and Olayinka Tinubu. He also has three children from previous relationships: Kazeem Oladiji Tinubu (deceased), Folashade Tinubu, and Oluwaseyi Tinubu. Tinubu is a Muslim.
