Early Life and CareerJonathan Evans joined the Security Service, also known as MI5, in 1980. Throughout his career, he specialized in counterterrorism operations, particularly focusing on combating the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Counterterrorism Expertise
Since 1999, Evans has played a pivotal role in developing and implementing measures to counter the threat of Islamic extremism and international terrorism. In 2005, he was appointed Deputy Director General of the Security Service, and in 2001, he joined the MI5 board, just 10 days before the September 11 attacks.
Rise to Leadership
On March 7, 2007, the then-49-year-old Jonathan Evans was announced as the new Director General of MI5, succeeding Elizabeth Manningham-Buller. Manningham-Buller had served in the role for four and a half years, making her the second female MI5 chief. Evans took over at a time when the service was facing significant challenges, including the ongoing threat of terrorism.
