Early Life and Education
Boris Groys, a renowned philosopher, art theorist, and media theorist, is a Professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe in Germany. He began his academic journey in 1965, studying Mathematics and Mathematical Logic at the Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University).
Research and Publications in Leningrad
From 1971 to 1976, Groys worked as a researcher at various scientific institutes in Leningrad. In 1976, he relocated to Moscow, where he joined the Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics at Moscow State University. During this period, he also participated in unofficial art seminars and published articles on cultural studies, philosophy, and art theory in samizdat magazines.
Emigration to Germany and Academic Career
In December 1981, Groys emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany. He resided in Munich and Cologne, where he became a co-founder of the religious and philosophical journal "Beseda." From 1982 to 1985, he held various scientific scholarships in Germany. He later worked as a freelance author in Cologne.
In the winter semester of 1988, Groys held a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania's Slavic Department in Philadelphia. From January 1988 to September 1994, he taught Russian culture at the Universität Münster in Germany. In the winter semester of 1991, he was appointed Professor in the Slavic Department and History of Art at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Professorship at State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe
In October 1994, Groys became a Professor of Philosophy, Art Theory, and Media Theory at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany. He held this position until his retirement. Additionally, he received a Fellowship from the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna during the winter semester of 1996-1997.
