Boris Gryzlov: A Prominent Russian Politician
Early Life and EducationBoris Gryzlov was born on December 15, 1950, in Vladivostok, Russia. In 1954, his family moved to Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Gryzlov graduated from high school with honors and pursued higher education at the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute named after V.A. Bonch-Bruyevich. In 1973, he earned a degree in radio engineering, specializing in satellite communication systems.
Career in Industry and Politics
After graduation, Gryzlov worked at the Research Institute of Powerful Radio Engineering (1973-1975) and the Electronpribor plant (1975-1995), where he rose to the position of trade union committee chairman. In 1997, he co-founded Electronpribor Ltd. From 1996 to 1998, he served as director of the Educational and Methodological Center for New Educational Technologies at the Baltic State Technical University named after D.F. Ustinov.
Entry into Politics and Parliamentary Career
Gryzlov entered politics in the late 1990s. He ran unsuccessfully for the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg in 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he led the Interregional Fund for Business Cooperation "Development of Regions." In 1999, he was elected to the State Duma (Russian parliament) as a member of the Unity bloc. Gryzlov subsequently became leader of the Unity faction in the Duma and represented the body in relations with the G-7 countries.
Ministership of Internal Affairs
In March 2001, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Gryzlov as Minister of Internal Affairs, emphasizing that it was a "political appointment." Former Deputy Secretary of the Security Council, Vladimir Vasiliev, returned to the Ministry as Deputy Minister.
Personal Life and Achievements
Boris Gryzlov is married to Ada Viktorovna. They have two children: Dmitry (born 1979) and Evgenia (born 1980). In May 2001, Gryzlov earned a PhD degree in political science from the Saint Petersburg State University.
