Early Career at Real MadridBorja Valero began his football journey at Real Madrid's youth academy. From 2005 to 2007, he played for Real Madrid's reserve team in the Segunda Division. He also made a handful of appearances for the first team in the Copa del Rey and Champions League.
Move to Mallorca and La Liga Breakthrough
In August 2007, Valero joined Mallorca on a free transfer. During the 2007/08 La Liga season, he made 35 appearances (17 starts) and scored 4 goals, helping the Balearic club avoid relegation.
Premier League Adventure with West Bromwich Albion
Valero made the move to English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion in August 2008. The transfer fee was £4.7 million, and he signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year. He played 31 Premier League matches but couldn't prevent West Brom from being relegated in 2009.
Return to Mallorca on Loan and Individual Accolades
In the final hours of the summer transfer window in 2009, Valero was loaned back to Mallorca for a year. He became a key player for the team, making 33 appearances and scoring 5 goals. He helped Mallorca secure a 5th-place finish in La Liga and was awarded the Don Balón Prize for the best Spanish player of the season.
Permanent Move to Villarreal and Redemption
On July 8, 2010, Valero was loaned to Villarreal with an option to buy, which the Spanish club exercised on July 1, 2011. At Villarreal, Valero established himself as a reliable midfielder, making over 100 appearances in La Liga.
Transfer to Fiorentina: A Memorable Stint in Italy
In 2012, Valero made a move to Fiorentina in Italy. He spent six years with the Florence-based club, amassing over 200 appearances in all competitions. Valero became a fan favorite and played an integral role in Fiorentina's Europa League campaign in 2014/15.
Arrival at Inter Milan: A New Chapter in Milan
On July 10, 2017, Valero joined Serie A giants Internazionale. The transfer fee was reported to be €5.5 million, with Fiorentina potentially receiving an additional €1.5 million in bonuses.
