Early Life and Education
Borjana Krišto was born on August 13, 1961, in Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina, then part of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina within Yugoslavia. She completed her secondary education at the Livno Economic School in 1980 and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Banja Luka in 1984. She passed the bar exam in Sarajevo.
Political Career
Entry into PoliticsKrišto joined the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) in 1995. She rose through the ranks quickly, becoming a member of the party's presidency in 2001 and its deputy chair in 2007.
Regional Government
Krišto served as Minister of Justice for the Herzegovina-Bosnian Canton from 1999 to 2000. From 2000 to 2002, she was the Secretary of the Government of the Herzegovina-Bosnian Canton.
Federal Parliament
Krišto was elected to the House of Representatives of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 2006 elections. She was part of Bosnia and Herzegovina's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
President of the Federation
In 2007, Krišto became the first woman to be elected President of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She served until 2011.
House of Peoples
After her term as president, Krišto was elected a member of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2010.
House of Representatives
Krišto returned to the House of Representatives in 2014 and served as its Croatian chair. She was re-elected in 2018.
Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Coalition FormationFollowing the October 2022 elections, Krišto led the coalition government talks that resulted in a coalition government consisting of the HDZ BiH, the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP BiH).
Appointment and Confirmation
On December 22, 2022, the Presidency appointed Krišto as Prime Minister. The House of Representatives confirmed her appointment on January 25, 2023, making her the first woman to hold the position.
