Brandon Barnes Biography

Brandon Barnes is an American musician and producer, best known as the drummer for the punk rock band 'Rise Against'. He was born on October 10, 1972 in Denver, Colorado. Barnes received his first drum set at the age of nine from his grandfather, a jazz musician from Chicago. From the ages of 12 to 17, he took drum lessons and played in a jazz band in high school. Barnes studied at the University of Colorado's music program, dreaming of making his mark in the music industry.

Joining 'Pinhead Circus' and 'Rise Against'

The band 'Pinhead Circus' was formed by guitarist Jimmy Pinhead, bassist Trevor, and drummer Otis. Brandon joined the group in 1999 after Otis left. However, shortly after the release of their second album, 'Everything Else Is Just a Far Gone Conclusion', Barnes joined the Chicago-based band 'Rise Against' in 2000. 'Rise Against' signed with indie label 'Fat Wreck Chords' in 2001. After their debut release, 'The Unraveli', Barnes went on tour with the band.

Success with 'Rise Against'

In December 2002, when the band returned to the studio, they began recording their second full-length album, 'Revolutions Per Minute'. In 2003, Barnes celebrated the band's small success, largely due to their participation in the 'Warped Tour'. That same year, 'Rise Against' caught the attention of the major label 'Geffen Records'. Their new album, 'Siren Song of the Counter Culture', released in August 2004, reached 136th place on the 'Billboard 200' album chart. The singles 'Give It All', 'Swing Life Away', and 'Life Less Frightening' achieved notable recognition.

Continued Success and Personal Life

Barnes returned to the studio in January 2006 after touring in support of 'Siren Song of the Counter Culture' and began recording the band's fourth album in Colorado. The album, titled 'The Sufferer & the Witness', was produced by Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore. This time, the album reached 10th position on the 'Billboard 200', received positive reviews from critics, and was successful commercially. The singles 'Ready to Fall', 'Prayer of the Refugee', and 'The Good Left Undone' gained significant popularity. 'Rise Against' toured in support of 'The Sufferer & the Witness' throughout the second half of 2006 and the entire 2007, including headlining the 'Warped Tour' in 2006.

Barnes participated in the recording of the band's fifth album, 'Appeal to Reason', which sold 64,700 copies in its first week and reached 3rd place on the 'Billboard 200' chart. The drummer was also involved in the production of 'Endgame', released on March 11, 2011, in the United States. This release was well received by critics and reached 2nd place on the 'Billboard 200'. Barnes took part in the 'Endgame Tour' alongside 'Bad Religion'.

Currently, Brandon Barnes lives in Colorado with his wife Tara, daughter Stella, and son. He has developed his own playing style over the past ten years, influenced by his favorite drummers, including Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Dave Lombardo, Peter Erskine, and Terry Bozzio.
