Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Brendan Canning was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1969. Growing up, he developed a passion for both cinema and music, two interests that would later converge in his work creating film soundtracks. As a teenager, he started writing songs that would eventually be included on the albums of his first band, hHead.

hHead and By Divine Right

Formed in 1991, hHead initially went by the name "Head." However, after learning of an existing band with the same name, they added an "h" to differentiate themselves. The band released three successful albums and gained popularity within the burgeoning independent music scene.

Canning joined By Divine Right as a bassist and recorded one album with the band, "Bless This Mess." Despite its eccentric title, the album failed to gain significant traction, and Canning left the group shortly after its release in 2000.

Broken Social Scene

Canning's most significant musical achievement came as a founding member of Broken Social Scene. He participated in the recording of all five of the band's studio albums and several singles, transforming the Canadian indie band into an international festival favorite. Their album "You Forgot It in People" won Best Album of 2003, as did their self-titled 2005 release.

Solo Career and Film Scores

In 2008, Canning released his debut solo album, "Something for All of Us." The record was met with mixed reviews from critics, but it resonated strongly with fans of Canning and his projects.

Canning has also played a significant role in the film industry.
