Briahna Joy Gray: A Prominent Political Figure
Early Life and EducationBriahna Joy Gray was born on August 15, 1985, in Washington, D.C., to Reuben Gray and Leslie Fair-Gray, both educators. Growing up primarily in North Carolina, she also spent time in Saudi Arabia and Kenya, where her parents taught at international schools. In 2001, tragedy struck when her father was fatally injured in a car accident involving an American diplomat while driving in Nairobi.
Gray earned a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
Professional Career
After law school, Gray worked as a litigation attorney in New York City at Dewey Pegno & Kramarsky LLP and Stroock & Stroock & Lavan. She also hosted the political and pop culture podcast "Nobody Is Wrong on the Internet."
In 2018, Gray joined The Intercept as a senior politics editor, and she has also written for Rolling Stone, Current Affairs, The Guardian, and New York Magazine.
Political Involvements
Gray was a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign in 2016 and joined his 2020 campaign as his national press secretary. Notably, she publicly stated that she voted for Jill Stein in the 2016 presidential election.
In 2020, Gray was included in Fortune magazine's "40 Under 40" list in the Government and Politics category. Following Sanders' withdrawal from the 2020 Democratic primary, Gray expressed opposition to presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden on Twitter. Sanders subsequently distanced himself from her, stating that "She's my former press secretary, not a surrogate."
Post-Campaign Activities
Following the conclusion of Sanders' 2020 campaign, Gray resumed her role as contributing editor at Current Affairs while also co-hosting the podcast "Bad Faith" with Virgil Texas of Chapo Trap House. Since 2023, she has been co-hosting The Hill's YouTube program "Rising."
