Biography of Brian Quinn
Brian Quinn is a former Northern Irish and American football midfielder and coach. He is best known for his time as the head coach of the MLS club San Jose Clash from 1997 to 1999, where he became the youngest coach in league history. During his tenure, the team achieved 35 victories and suffered 41 defeats.
Early Career
Quinn began his career playing for Larne in Northern Ireland during the 1978/79 season. He then spent the next two seasons with Everton in England, although he did not appear in any league matches. In 1981, Quinn moved to North America and joined the Los Angeles Aztecs in the NASL for one season. He then played two seasons for the Montreal Manic before joining the San Diego Sockers in 1984.
Success in MISL
From 1984 until 1992, Quinn played for the San Diego Sockers in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), where the game was played 6v6 indoors. He and his club won the tournament a total of 8 times. He also played for the Hamilton Steelers in the Canadian Soccer League during the late 1980s.
International Career
Quinn represented the United States national team from 1991 to 1994, earning 48 caps. In order to play for the US, he had to acquire citizenship. He was part of the team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1991 and finished third in the King Fahd Cup in 1992. Quinn scored his only international goal in a victorious match against Guatemala (3-0). He was a contender for the 1994 FIFA World Cup but did not make the final roster.
Coaching and Later Career
After retiring as a player, Quinn transitioned into coaching. He became the head coach of the MLS club San Jose Clash from 1997 to 1999, where he achieved moderate success. Following that, he joined the coaching staff of the University of San Diego Toreros in 2008 as an assistant coach. Quinn also founded his own football school and wrote the foreword for a book on the history of World Cup championships, published in August 2007. He is currently involved in football commentary.
