Early Life and Playing CareerBorn on May 3, 1961, in York, England, Steven "Steve" McClaren came from a working-class family with a history in various occupations. He attended Nunthorpe Grammar School, where he excelled in sports despite his small stature. McClaren played rugby, tennis, and squash, and captained the school football team, representing Yorkshire in the under-15 team.
His playing career saw him feature as a midfielder in the lower leagues. He joined Hull City in 1979, making 178 appearances and scoring 16 goals. He later played for Derby County, Bristol City, and Oxford United, retiring after 33 appearances due to injury.
Coaching Career
After a brief stint with Oxford United's youth team, McClaren became assistant manager at Derby County under Jim Smith. In 1999, he replaced Brian Kidd at Manchester United, assisting Sir Alex Ferguson in winning a historic treble that season, including the Champions League and FA Cup.
Despite initially being misidentified as "Steve McClaeridge," McClaren quickly gained recognition for his tactical acumen, employing video analysis and football psychology. He used a 4-4-2 formation and emphasized pressing and counterattacking.
In 2001, McClaren took charge of Middlesbrough, leading the club to a League Cup victory in 2004 and a UEFA Cup runner-up finish in 2006. He was appointed England manager in August 2006 but was criticized for his tactical choices and team selection.

England's failure to qualify for the 2008 European Championship resulted in McClaren's dismissal in November 2007. During the crucial match, he was seen sheltering under a large blue umbrella, earning him the nickname "Wally with the Brolly."
He became a figure of ridicule in the English media, with critics drawing parallels to the previous England manager who failed to qualify for a major tournament, Graham Taylor.
Redemption and Twente Success
After being fired by the English Football Association, McClaren rebounded in 2008 by taking over Dutch club Twente. He guided the team to their first Eredivisie title in 2010, earning praise for his tactical flexibility and player development.
Current Position and Legacy
McClaren currently serves as head coach of German club Wolfsburg, having left Twente in 2010. He remains a respected figure in English football, known for his organizational skills, tactical awareness, and ability to work under pressure.
