Brice Oligui Nguema: A Military Leader at the Helm of Gabon
Early Life and FamilyBrice Oligui Nguema was born into a prominent Gabonese family in 1974 or 1975. His mother, a Bateke, was a cousin of former President Omar Bongo. His father, a Fang, was a military officer. Growing up in the Haut-Ogooué region, Oligui was primarily raised by his mother.
Military Career
Oligui attended the Royal Military Academy in Meknes, Morocco, before serving as an aide-de-camp to President Omar Bongo until his death in 2009. In the wake of Ali Bongo's election as President in 2009, Oligui was appointed as military attaché to Gabon's embassies in Morocco and Senegal, a move he later described as an "exile."
Rise to Power
In October 2018, Oligui was recalled to Gabon and appointed Head of the Intelligence Service of the Republican Guard. He was promoted to Brigadier General in April 2019. In April 2020, he took command of the Republican Guard, replacing General Grégoire Kouna, a cousin of former President Ali Bongo.
2023 Coup and Transition
During the 2023 Gabon military coup, Oligui led the Transitional Council for the Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) and was appointed interim President of Gabon. He was sworn into office on September 4, 2023.
Transitional Period
Oligui has pledged to lead Gabon towards a transition to civilian rule with free and fair elections. He has promised to release political prisoners, facilitate the return of exiles, and combat corruption. He has also appointed a transitional government and announced plans to draft new electoral and criminal laws.
Allegations of Corruption
Oligui has been accused of amassing significant wealth, including properties in the United States. He has dismissed these allegations as "personal matters."
Assessment
