Birth and Early Life
Rupert Brooke was born on August 3 in Warwickshire, England. His father headed Rugby School, which Brooke later attended in 1901.
School and University
At Rugby, Brooke excelled in sports, academics, and poetry. He matriculated at Cambridge University in 1906 and graduated with honors in 1909. Brooke spent the next three years pursuing further studies and writing, interspersed with travels to Europe.
Literary Debut
His first collection of poems, "Poems," was published in late 1911. In 1913, Brooke embarked on a journey to the South Pacific, spending an idyllic three months in Tahiti.
Military Service and Death
Upon his return in June 1914, Brooke was immediately commissioned as an officer by Winston Churchill. He participated in the Antwerp Expedition and sailed to the Dardanelles. On the Greek island of Skyros, Brooke contracted tetanus and passed away on April 23, 1915.
A Legacy Cut Short
Brooke's second volume of poetry was published posthumously. Despite dying before fully developing his voice and style, Brooke left behind a body of remarkable poetry, including the renowned sonnet "The Soldier."
