Early Life and Theatre Career
Born on November 26, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, Bruce Paltrow began his career in the 1960s as a theatre actor. He immersed himself in stage productions throughout the decade.
Transition to Screenwriting
By the early 1970s, Paltrow began transitioning to television as a screenwriter. His first screenplay, "Shirts/Skins," aired on ABC in 1973. The show followed six businessmen who turned their weekly basketball game into a comical game of hide-and-seek.
Success in Television
In 1978, Paltrow created "The White Shadow" for MTM. This drama centered on a former professional basketball player who became the coach of an all-African American high school team. Building on this success, Paltrow served as executive producer for the critically acclaimed drama "St. Elsewhere" (1982-1988). Despite its lack of commercial success, the series garnered numerous Emmy nominations.
Film and Return to Television
In 1982, Paltrow directed the film "A Little Sex." He also directed and co-wrote the comedy-drama "Duets" (1997), which launched his daughter, Gwyneth Paltrow's, film career. In the mid-1980s, Paltrow relocated to New York and created and produced "Tattinger's" (1988), a drama set in a Manhattan restaurant. After declining ratings, he retooled the show as "Nick & Hillary" but it eventually faltered.
Later Career
Disillusioned with the network television format, Paltrow took a hiatus and returned as a writer and co-producer for the comedy series "Home Fires" (1992). In 1994, he produced and directed the CBS pilot "The Road Home."
Legacy
Bruce Paltrow's career spanned multiple decades and had a significant impact on both television and film. He was a talented screenwriter, producer, and director who left behind a legacy of acclaimed and beloved projects. His relationship with his daughter, Gwyneth, remained close throughout his life. Paltrow passed away in October 2002 due to complications from pneumonia and recurring throat cancer.
