C.Z. Guest, born Lucy Douglas Cochrane on February 19, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American theater actress, author, journalist, equestrian, fashion designer, and socialite. She gained some fame as a fashion icon and was often seen in elegant garments by renowned designers, including the brand 'Mainbocher'. Known for her unpretentious and neat style, Guest is often referred to as a representative of typical American fashion.

Early Life and Career

Lucy Douglas Cochrane, nicknamed C.Z. Guest, was born to investment banker Alexander Lynde Cochrane. Her brother called her 'Sissy', which eventually transformed into 'C.Z.' She tried her hand at acting, including in the Broadway series "Ziegfeld Follies" in 1944.

Marriage and Family

On March 8, 1947, C.Z. Guest married Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, a polo champion and member of the prestigious British Guest family. The wedding ceremony took place at the home of American writer Ernest Hemingway in Havana, Cuba. They had two children, Alexander Guest and Cornelia Guest.

Public Recognition and Writing

C.Z. Guest appeared on the cover of TIME magazine on July 20, 1962, as one of the participants in a feature about American society. After suffering an injury during a horseback ride in 1976, she started writing a gardening column for the New York Post.
