Carl Siegfried: Biblical Scholar and University Rector
Early Life and EducationCarl Siegfried was born on January 22, 1830, in Magdeburg, Germany, to Karl Wilhelm Siegfried, a city planner. He pursued studies in theology and philosophy at the universities of Halle and Bonn, where he was mentored by renowned scholars such as Müller, Guhfeldt, Bernhardi, Roß, and Riech.
Teaching and Doctoral Studies
After graduating university, Siegfried taught at гимназии in Magdeburg and Guben. In 1859, he earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Halle with a dissertation on the Septuagint. He continued teaching at the Magdeburg Cathedral School until 1865, before moving to the Landesschule Pforta.
Professorship at Jena University
In 1875, Siegfried was appointed full professor of Old Testament theology at the University of Jena. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by the university. He served as dean of the faculty of theology and, in 1882 and 1895, as rector of the university for a semester.
Scholarly Contributions
As a scholar, Siegfried was renowned for his historical-critical studies of the Old Testament. He specialized in ancient Hebrew, Hellenistic Judaism, and the writings of Philo of Alexandria. His reviews of Philo's works were highly regarded.
Late Years and Legacy
In 1901, Siegfried retired due to ill health. He passed away on January 9, 1903, in Jena. His contributions to biblical scholarship and university administration left a lasting impact on the field of Old Testament studies.
