Biography of Carl Friedrich Zeiss

Carl Friedrich Zeiss (1816–1888) was a German optician and mechanical engineer, best known for his work as a microscope constructor. He was born on September 11, 1816, in Weimar, Germany. Zeiss studied in Stuttgart and in 1846, he opened a small optical workshop in Jena.

Early Career

In Jena, Zeiss repaired old optical instruments and developed new devices for the Institute of Natural Sciences at the University of Jena. His workshop quickly expanded, and Zeiss gained a reputation as a constructor of the best microscopes, which found wide applications in medicine and biology.

Collaboration with Ernst Abbe

In 1866, Zeiss began collaborating with renowned optician Ernst Abbe. Their partnership led to significant advancements in optical technology and the development of high-quality microscopes. Together, they revolutionized the field of microscopy and laid the foundation for the success of the Zeiss company.

Legacy

Carl Friedrich Zeiss passed away on December 3, 1888, in Jena. In 1889, the factory, led by Abbe, merged with a glass manufacturing enterprise headed by chemist Friedrich Schott, forming the company "Carl Zeiss - Jena." This company continues to be a leading manufacturer of optical instruments and is renowned worldwide for its contributions to the field of microscopy.
