Biography of Carla Gavazzi
Carla Gavazzi, an Italian opera soprano, was mostly known for her work in Italy. Born on February 26, 1913 in Bergamo, Gavazzi was one of the many talented Italian sopranos of the mid-20th century who were overshadowed by the emergence of international opera singers such as Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas.
Career and Repertoire
Carla Gavazzi possessed a powerful, warm, and vibrant voice, combined with expressive diction and delicate musicality. In 1940, she made her debut as Mimi in Puccini's "La bohème" and performed throughout Italy with a standard lyrico-dramatic repertoire, including works by Mozart, Puccini, and Verdi. Gavazzi's performances of contemporary opera compositions also garnered admiration from both audiences and critics. Among these were "Mathis der Maler" by Paul Hindemith, "La favola del figlio cambiato" by Gian Francesco Malipiero, "La campana sommersa" by Ottorino Respighi, "Margherita da Cortona" by Licinio Refice, "Cyrano de Bergerac," and "Risurrezione" by Franco Alfano. Alfano even chose her for the premiere of his vocal cycle on Tadzio's poetry.
Television and Film
Gavazzi appeared in the Italian television production of Pietro Mascagni's "Cavalleria rusticana" in 1957 and in the film "Opera Fanatic" by German director Jan Schmidt-Garre in 1998. In the early 1950s, she also made several recordings for the 'Cetra' record company, including the roles of Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni," Nedda in "Pagliacci," Adriana in "Adriana Lecouvreur," and Minnie in "La fanciulla del west."
Retirement and Legacy
Unfortunately, in 1959, Gavazzi had to retire due to family reasons, just when she received an invitation to perform at the Royal Opera House in London, which could have been the beginning of her international career. She passed away on May 25, 2008, at the age of 95 in Milan.
