Biography of Tamara Iveri

Early Life and Education

Tamara Iveri, a Georgian opera soprano, was born into the family of renowned baritone Avtandil Javakishvili. She made her debut at a young age as part of the children's choir in Carmen and studied vocal performance at the Tbilisi National Conservatory.

Rise to Prominence

In May 1998, Iveri garnered attention by performing her first solo role as Desdemona in Otello in Tbilisi, alongside Icelandic tenor Christian Johansson and Italian baritone Renato Bruson. This led to an invitation to join the Batumi National Theater and perform as a guest singer in the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre. In July 1998, she participated in the Voci Verdiane Competition in Busseto, where she won second prize. Later that year, she embarked on a concert tour in Japan, showcasing arias from various operas.

International Success

In January 1999, Iveri won first place at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and was invited by Mstislav Rostropovich to perform at the Evian Festival in France. She also participated in a charity concert in Vienna alongside American mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry and Italian mezzo-soprano Fiorenza Cossotto, singing arias by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, and Charpentier. From 2000 to 2002, Iveri gained international recognition on the opera stage.

Continued Achievements

During this time, she debuted as Elisabetta in Don Carlo at the Bonn Opera and portrayed Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and Liù in Turandot at the Grazer Opernhaus. In 2001, she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera as Mimì in La Bohème. In March 2002, Iveri celebrated her Italian debut as Desdemona at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and in July of the same year, she performed Amelia in Simon Boccanegra at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She continued her success in subsequent seasons, performing in various opera houses, festivals, and concerts worldwide.

Recognition and Awards

Iveri received the Eberhard Wächter Medal in Austria and a national award in Georgia for her exceptional contribution to the field of opera.
