Biography of Greg Albertin
Greg Albertin, a former motorcycle racer and former world champion, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He began his racing career by winning championships in South Africa and the Netherlands. He then moved on to compete in the World Motocross Championship Grands Prix.
In Europe, Albertin met Belgian racer Stefan Everts, and a fierce rivalry between them quickly developed. However, Albertin often came out as the victor in their competitions. In 1992, he won the World Championship in the '125cc' category. The following year, he switched to the '250cc' category and immediately claimed another championship title.
In 1994, Albertin successfully defended his championship title and began racing in the United States as part of the AMA National races. It was during this time that Roger DeCoster, the manager of the Suzuki team, noticed Albertin's potential and recruited him to revitalize the struggling team.
Although Albertin had little experience in Supercross racing, he demonstrated his exceptional potential despite a few setbacks. In 1996, he faced similar challenges, with podium finishes eluding him. However, he received fewer injuries compared to previous seasons.
In 1997, Albertin joined the Suzuki team alongside Jeremy McGrath. By this time, Albertin had become familiar with Supercross racing and started achieving remarkable results. He consistently finished in the top three and even won several major races.
His success continued in 1998, and 1999 became the pinnacle of his career. Albertin triumphed over a team of renowned racers, winning his first AMA championship and bringing his team their first victory in nearly 20 years.
In one of the races in 2000, Albertin broke his leg. Although he returned to the track relatively quickly, he couldn't withstand the pressure from Ricky Carmichael. At the end of the season, Albertin announced his retirement from racing.
