Early Life and EducationCarlo Salteri was born on October 23, 1920, in Milan, Italy, into an affluent family. His father, Giuseppe, was a renowned mechanical engineer, and his mother, Flavia, was a homemaker. Salteri pursued mechanical engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, but his studies were interrupted when he was conscripted into the Italian Army during World War II.
Career in Engineering and Transfield
After the war, Salteri joined the Italian engineering firm Società Anonima Elettrificazione (SAE). In 1951, he moved to Australia with SAE to oversee electrical transmission line construction projects. He partnered with Franco Belgiorno and together, they founded Transfield in 1956.
Transfield became a major engineering conglomerate, specializing in large-scale projects such as bridges, tunnels, and power plants. It played a significant role in Australia's infrastructure development, building iconic structures like the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.
Founding of Tenix
In the 1990s, tensions between Salteri and Belgiorno led to the division of Transfield. Salteri took control of the company's northern Sydney headquarters and defense contracts, renaming it Tenix.
Tenix grew rapidly, securing contracts for frigate construction and the Jindalee Operational Radar Network. It expanded its defense operations and diversified into infrastructure, utilities, and traffic enforcement systems. Salteri retired as chairman in 2007, leaving Tenix with an annual revenue of $1.7 billion.
Legacy and Honors
Salteri was a visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist. He received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Order of Australia. He established the Tenix Foundation and actively supported educational initiatives and indigenous student programs.
Carlo Salteri passed away in 2010 at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of engineering excellence, business acumen, and social responsibility. His name continues to be synonymous with innovation and progress in the Australian engineering and construction industries.
