Early Career and Rise to Prominence
Hailing from Uruguay, Aguilera began his footballing journey with Racing Montevideo before moving to Nacional. In 1985, he embarked on a journey abroad, joining Colombian clubs.
Italian Stardom
In 1989, Aguilera made waves in Italian football by joining Genoa. Reunited with compatriot Ruben Paz and Jose Perdomo, he established himself as a formidable presence in the squad. His impressive goalscoring stats, including 8 goals in his first season, 15 goals in his second, and 10 goals in his third, cemented his status as one of Genoa's most prolific strikers. Aguilera's crowning achievement with Genoa came in a memorable match against Liverpool in 1992, where he scored a brace to secure a historic victory for his team.
Turin and Return to Uruguay
After a successful stint at Genoa, Aguilera moved to Torino in 1992, where he bagged 12 goals and won the Coppa Italia. However, his time at Torino was short-lived, and he eventually returned to Uruguay, rejoining Peñarol, where he played until his retirement five years later.
Legal Troubles and Pardon
Aguilera's career in Italy took a turn in 1996 when he was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment for drug use and soliciting prostitutes. He avoided the trial and never set foot on Italian soil again. In 2007, he was pardoned.
