Early Works

In 1991, Atanes directed the short drama "The Marvellous World of the Cucu Bird," a fantastical love story between a crazy killer and a young prostitute. This was followed by other experimental works such as "El Tenor Mental" (1993) and "Borneo" (1997). Some of Atanes' fantastic works, including "La Metamorfosis de Franz Kafka" (1993), "Morfing" (1995), "Metaminds & Metabodies" (1995–1999), and "Welcome to Spain" (1999), offer viewers a unique perspective on cinema and a special relationship with reality.

Cinematic Controversy and Activism

Atanes is a filmmaker whose work sparks much debate. He is also an activist who has always advocated for the necessity of independent film companies, digital cinema, and the science fiction genre - a genre unusual for Spain.

The Aleister Crowley Project

In 2003, Atanes embarked on a project about the famous British occultist, mystic, and writer Aleister Crowley. The result was "Perdurabo," a 40-minute film that is expected to be the first part of a feature film when Atanes returns to this project.

First Feature Film and Recognition

Atanes's first feature film was the dystopia "FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions" (2004), a low-budget film about life in French society in the near future when all of Europe is controlled by a totalitarian government. In 2005, the film won the award for "Best Artistic Film" at the Athens Panorama of Independent Filmmakers in Greece and was also nominated for the "Méliès d'Argent" at the Fantasporto International Film Festival.

Contributions to Science Fiction

Following the film "PROXIMA" (2007), Atanes became one of the few Spanish directors working in the science fiction genre. In 2008, he directed the documentary film "Made in Próxima" about the making of "PROXIMA." That same year, Atanes compiled three of his strangest and most insane films into an anthology called "CODEX ATANICUS," which has the potential to become a cult film based on the enthusiastic reviews from independent American film critics.

Collaborative Projects

In 2008, Atanes worked on the collective project "Pulque 51" alongside directors Albert Pons, Victor Conde, and El Chico Morera. This project made actress Arancha Peña the new Spanish scream queen.

"Maximum Shame"

In 2010, Atanes directed "Maximum Shame," a full-length fetishistic, surrealistic, and musical science fiction film that fully revived the strange atmosphere of "CODEX ATANICUS." "Maximum Shame" was nominated for Best Feature Film at the Dutch Film Festival in Breda in 2010.
