Carlos Darwin Quintero is a Colombian footballer who currently plies his trade as a striker for Minnesota United in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Colombian national team. Born on September 19, 1987, in the coastal city of Tumaco, Quintero's early life was shaped by his humble beginnings and unwavering faith.
Early Career and Rise to Prominence
At the tender age of 5, Quintero's family relocated to Cali, where he spent his formative years in the impoverished neighborhood of Puerto del Sol. His passion for football blossomed within the walls of the Panadería Cucuta academy. Quintero's exceptional talent later caught the attention of Barcelona, where he showcased his skills in various youth categories.
In 2004, under the guidance of coach Elkin Kogorte, Quintero embarked on a transformative journey to Argentina for trials with Boca Juniors. His remarkable abilities soon caught the eye of Humberto Ortiz, who brought him to Deportes Tolima. Quintero's name, Carlos, was bestowed upon him in honor of his uncle, while Darwin was inspired by a literary character.
Professional Debut and Success
Quintero's professional debut came at the age of 18 with Deportes Tolima, starting out as a member of the reserve team. Under the tutelage of coach Jorge Luis Bernal, he underwent a rigorous training program that helped him gain 14 kilograms. On July 18, 2005, Quintero made his Colombian Primera A debut against Atletico Junior.
In 2007, Quintero joined Russian Premier League side Krylia Sovetov alongside his Tolima teammate Juan Carlos Escobar. He enjoyed a brief stint in Europe, making his debut against Spartak Moscow and scoring his first goal against Zenit.
Return to South America and Mexican Stardom
After a season in Russia, Quintero returned to his native Colombia and signed for Deportivo Pereira. His impressive performances there attracted the attention of Mexican club Santos Laguna, who acquired him for a fee of $4.5 million in 2009.
At Santos Laguna, Quintero established himself as a formidable force in Mexican football. He helped the team reach three consecutive finals in the Apertura and Clausura tournaments, including a championship victory in the Clausura 2012 season.
International Career and Current Endeavors
In 2007, Quintero represented Colombia at the South American Youth Championship. He made his senior international debut in 2008 and has since scored numerous goals for his country.
