Oscar Panno was an esteemed Argentine chess grandmaster who achieved numerous accolades and left an indelible mark on the world of chess. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1915, Panno's exceptional talent was evident from an early age.
National Champion
Panno emerged as the Argentine national chess champion twice, in 1936 and 1940. He also secured impressive second-place finishes in the championships of 1949 and 1953, along with two third-place finishes in 1948 and 1952.
International Success
Panno's chess prowess extended beyond Argentine borders. He represented Argentina in four Chess Olympiads (1937–1950 and 1954) and played a memorable match against Isai Boleslavsky in the USSR–Argentina match of 1954 on the eighth board, where he recorded a commendable +1, =2 score.
Zonal and Interzonal Tournaments
Panno participated in several zonal tournaments, including the Mar del Plata tournaments of 1951 (fifth place) and 1954 (third-fourth place). He also competed in the Gothenburg Interzonal Tournament in 1955, where he finished in a respectable 12th-13th place.
Other International Achievements
Panno's international success extended to numerous tournaments, with notable performances in Mar del Plata (third-sixth place in 1934, fifth place in 1936, third-fourth place in 1944, fourth place in 1946, and second-third place in 1949 and 1950), Santiago (first place in 1940), São Paulo (first-second place in 1941), Buenos Aires (second-third place in 1945 and fourth-seventh place in 1960), Viña del Mar (first place in 1945), Enschede (first-second place in 1961), and Montevideo (second-third place in 1961).
