Charles Clark: A Pioneering Naval Architect

Charles Clark, a renowned Latvian shipbuilder and professor at the Riga Polytechnic Institute, was born into a prominent Scottish family in the Livonian Governorate. His father, John Clark, was a professor of drawing and sketching at the Riga Polytechnic Institute.

Education and Early Career

After completing his primary education at Fromm's City School and a period at the City Classical Gymnasium, Charles matriculated at the Riga Polytechnic Institute in 1886. He graduated with distinction in 1894, earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Following his graduation, Clark joined the Experimental Shipbuilding Factory, where he showcased his exceptional talent as a ship designer.

Professorship and Legacy at Riga Polytechnic Institute

In 1898, Charles Clark became a lecturer at the Riga Polytechnic Institute and established the new discipline of Naval Architecture. He received the title of professor in 1902 and served as the Dean of the Mechanical Faculty from 1905 to 1917. Clark's unwavering passion for shipbuilding shaped his entire career.

Notable Projects

Among Clark's most notable work was the design for the "Pyotr Velikiy," an icebreaker commissioned by the Riga Governorate. He played a pivotal role in its creation, leaving a lasting legacy in Latvian naval architecture.

Personal Life

Charles Clark married Nadezhda Lisenko, the daughter of a Russian Orthodox army colonel, in 1897. Due to religious differences, they held their wedding ceremony in Berlin. The couple had eight children, all baptized in the Riga Reformed Church as per their joint decision.
