Biography of Carmen Kass

Estonian supermodel, actress, and politician Carmen Kass was born in Tallinn and raised in the village of Mao, near Paide, Järvamaa. She was raised by her mother, Koidu Põder, who also raised her older sister Victoria and older brother Kutt. Her father, Viktor Kass, is a chess teacher in Põlva.

Career

When Kass was 14 years old, a modeling scout from Milan discovered her in a supermarket. Her mother, who was a single parent working as a waitress, refused to sign permission for her daughter to go to Milan for three months. In order to pursue her dream, Kass forged her mother's signature on the documents. However, her first attempt at modeling was unsuccessful, and she left Milan shortly after. At the age of 18, she moved to Paris.

Kass gained fame by appearing on the covers of American, French, British, and Italian Vogue, Australian Elle, UK Image, Madame Figaro, and French Numéro. Her first cover was for French Vogue in November 1997. Anna Wintour played a significant role in her career. By 1999, Kass was already walking in shows for renowned designers such as Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, and Dolce & Gabbana. She also posed for advertisements for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Gucci, Donna Karan, Dsquared2, Versace, Givenchy, Fendi, Max Mara, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Narciso Rodriguez, and even General Motors. In 2000, she won the VH1/Vogue Model of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Gisele Bündchen the previous year. In 2007, Kass became the face of ten advertising campaigns for well-known designers. That same year, she became a model and representative for Max Factor.

Kass served as the muse for Michael Kors and was the face of his brand for ten consecutive years. She was also the face of a fragrance by Narciso Rodriguez for 17 consecutive years. In 1999, she opened and closed the Victoria's Secret fashion show, and she also represented the brand in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2008.

Kass is considered one of the models who ended the era of heroin chic along with Gisele Bündchen. While living in New York, she attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. In 2004, Kass played the lead female role in the Estonian film "Starting Point". She also had a cameo appearance in the film "The Good Girl".

In 2010, Kass announced her intention to finish high school and obtain a higher education.

Public Activities

Kass was a candidate for the European Parliament from the Res Publica party in the 2004 elections. She received 2315 votes.

Personal Life

From 2004 to 2014, Kass was in a relationship with Eric Lobron, a German chess grandmaster.

She is fluent in Estonian, English, Russian, and Italian.

Her nephew, Antonio Sebastian Kass, is also a model and musician.
