Early Life and Career
Caroline Gebhard, later known by her pen name Séverine, was born in Paris, France on April 27, 1855. In 1880, she met Jules Vallès in Brussels and became a fervent supporter of his theories. She contributed to socialist publications and assisted Vallès in completing his novels.
Leadership of Le Cri du Peuple
After Vallès' death, Séverine took over the management of his newspaper, "Le Cri du Peuple," until 1888. Throughout her career, she remained an unwavering advocate for the oppressed, including Dreyfus and Sacco and Vanzetti.
Social Commentary and Activism
In 1892, Séverine's account of a meeting with Pope Leo XIII on social issues garnered significant attention. From 1898, she led the feminist newspaper "La Fronde," which, while supporting women's rights, also addressed broader current events.
Support for Social Revolutions
Séverine supported the Russian October Revolution and joined the French Communist Party from 1921 to 1922. She later resigned to maintain her membership in the League of Human Rights. Throughout her life, Séverine remained a relentless voice for social justice and progressive ideas.
