Maria Matios: Ukrainian Author and Politician
Early Life and EducationMaria Matios was born on December 19, 1959, in the village of Rostoky in the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine. She later graduated from the philology faculty of the Chernivtsi National University in 1982, majoring in Ukrainian language and literature.
Literary Career
Matios began writing poetry at the age of 15. Her prose debut came in 1992 with the publication of the novella "Yuriana i Dovhopol" in the magazine "Kyiv." The preface to this publication was written by renowned Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Drozd.
Political Engagement
In 2012, Matios joined the "UDAR (Punch)" political party led by Vitali Klitschko and ran for a seat in the Ukrainian Parliament. She was elected and served as a Member of Parliament from 2012 to 2014.
In 2014, Matios switched to the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and was elected to Parliament once again. During her time in Parliament, she served as a deputy chairman of the Committee for the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.

Matios has also written widely in the field of publicism and has received the "Blahovist" and "Volodymyr Babliak" literary prizes for her work. She was awarded the Order of Princess Olga, 3rd Degree.
