Early Career

Belgian footballer and striker Mbo Mpenza began his professional football career in 1997 with K.A.A. Gent before joining Premier League club Coventry City in 1999.

Coventry City

On 12 October 1999, Mpenza signed a season-long loan deal with Premier League club Coventry City. Making his debut on 16 October in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United as a substitute for Gary McAllister, Mpenza scored his first goal for the club with a header against Aston Villa at Highfield Road on 22 November 1999.

Impressing during his initial loan spell, Mpenza was signed by Coventry permanently in January 2000 for a fee of £1.2 million, despite "substantial" offers from Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur. He finished his first Premier League season with six goals, including a brace in a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in February 2000. Mpenza also formed a successful strike partnership with young Irish forward Robbie Keane.

However, the following season saw him struggle for goalscoring form, partly due to setbacks from injuries. In mid-January 2001, amid Coventry's struggles in the league, several bids were made for Mpenza's services, including one from Wimbledon. After refusing the move to Wimbledon, he criticized the Coventry board for attempting to use him as a makeweight in a deal to bring John Hartson to the club. He was particularly critical of club chairman Bryan Richardson for pushing through the move to Wimbledon, accusing him of failing to repay the loyalty Mpenza had shown by signing permanently for the club despite interest from "a few bigger clubs." Mpenza later described his time at Coventry as "the best part of my career."

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Within a few weeks, Mpenza was sold to First Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of "around £2 million." Finding himself largely out of favor at Molineux, he departed after 18 months, having scored twice in twenty-five appearances. For the 2002-03 season, he was loaned to hometown club Mons, who had recently been promoted to the Belgian Professional League. He finished the season as the division's top scorer alongside Wesley Sonck, with both players netting 22 goals.

Genk and Rubin Kazan

His prolific form attracted the attention of bigger clubs in the league, and Mpenza signed for K.R.C. Genk in 2003. His reputation in Belgian football was growing, and he made his debut for the Belgian national team in 2003.

After only one season with Genk, in which he scored thirteen goals, he moved on again, this time signing for Rubin Kazan in Russia.

Standard Liege, Zulte Waregem, and Brescia

Never fully settling in Russia, Mpenza returned to Belgium to play for Standard Liege. At Standard, he struggled to break into the first team and signed for Zulte Waregem after two unsuccessful years at the club. His spell there was again short-lived, and a year later, he signed for Italian Serie B club Brescia.

Mpenza soon found himself frozen out at Brescia, and the club became open to offers for him. In August 2007, he spent a week on trial with Scottish Premier League club Dundee United but returned home without signing the agreed loan deal.

Return to Mons

Instead, Mpenza opted to return to his former club Mons, where he signed a three-year contract.

Later Career

On 25 November 2010, Mpenza agreed to join Dutch team HSV Hoek in the Topklasse. In August 2011, he moved to R.U.S. Beloeil in Belgium.

On 13 February 2015, Mpenza announced his retirement from football at the age of 37.

Post-Football Career

Mpenza had a son (born 2001) with former girlfriend Kirsty Wood.

After retiring from football, Mpenza embarked on a career in real estate.

Mpenza passed away on 24 June 2023, at the age of 45, from a cardiac arrest. Mpenza reportedly collapsed on a terrace in Mons, and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.
