Cesar Sampson: A Journey of Rhythm, Humanity, and Voice
Early Life and Musical InfluencesAustrian singer-songwriter, vocal coach, model, personal trainer, and social worker Cesar Sampson embarked on his musical journey in Linz, Austria. Born on August 18, 1983, his childhood was steeped in music and dance, with a father as a dance teacher and a mother as the renowned composer, pianist, and vocalist Kathy Sampson.

Exposed to her mother's compositions from a tender age, Sampson developed a keen ear for rhythm and percussion, mastering drums by the age of five. His love for music grew as he performed with renowned artists of the Viennese alternative music scene, including Kruder & Dorfmeister, Sofa Surfers, and Louie Austen.

Multifaceted Career and Body Awareness
Beyond music, Sampson pursued modeling, personal training, fitness, and Pilates instruction. Through these experiences, he gained a profound understanding of his physicality and its impact on vocal performance. "Understanding the body can become a tool to help create a whole new voice," he explains.

Eurovision Connection and Solo Debut
Cesar Sampson is no stranger to Eurovision. He lent his vocal support as a backing vocalist for Bulgaria in 2016 with Poli Genova and 2017 with Kristian Kostov, who placed second with "Beautiful Mess." Despite his extensive behind-the-scenes work, Sampson yearned to take center stage.

On December 5, 2017, Sampson was announced as Austria's representative for Eurovision 2018. His debut single, "Nobody but You," written by Boris Milanov and Sebastian Arman, encapsulated his journey. "This song is the closing of a big circle for me," Sampson reflects. "It's not a coincidence that I never had a solo release or video before."

Artistic Vision and Influences
Sampson draws inspiration from Prince, blending rock and soul with gospel and blues influences. As the nephew of Helen "Pepsi" DeMacque from the 1980s duo Pepsi & Shirlie, he inherits a musical legacy that resonates in his soulful performances.
Sampson is a true artist-empath, according to ORF's programming director Kathrin Zechner. "He understands how to use his voice - as a singer and as a human being. His subtle understanding of music, his absorption in art, and his holistic approach to musicality are contagious."
Innate Rhythm and Vocal Mastery
For Sampson, rhythm is inherent. "Music came to me through rhythm and dance," he explains. "Both were natural, and I had thought of myself as a professional percussionist before I was a professional vocalist."
Through a process of rhythmic scatting, Sampson often initiates songwriting, aligning vibrations and grooves to create meaningful lyrics.
Humanitarian Spirit and Vocal Evolution
Sampson's humanitarianism led him to work with people with disabilities and physical limitations. This experience brought a profound shift in his perspective and approach to music. "My vocal wellness is the most developed of the instruments I have," he says. "And this has come with time. When I started exercising this very average voice I had, I had no idea what it was or what it could be."
Cesar Sampson embodies rhythm, humanity, and voice. His journey has culminated in a multifaceted career that showcases his talent, empathy, and unwavering passion for music.
