Early Career and Auckland City
Aaron Coombes began his professional football career with Football Kingz in the Australian National Soccer League in 2003/04, making six appearances. In 2004, he joined Auckland City, where he enjoyed significant success. Over the course of his time with the club, he helped them win four New Zealand Football Championships and two OFC Champions Leagues. Notably, in the 2009 Club World Cup, Coombes scored a goal in the Round of 16 against Al-Ahli Dubai.
Overseas Experience and Return to Auckland City
In the 2010/11 season, Coombes ventured to England to play for Fleet Town in the Isthmian League Premier Division, where they finished in 13th place. Before the start of the 2011/12 season, he returned to Auckland City. With the club, he won the OFC Champions League for a third time, but in the domestic league, they only managed to win the regular season and were eliminated in the semi-finals of the playoffs.
Success with Waitakere United
From the 2012/13 season onwards, Coombes represented Waitakere United. In his first season, they won the New Zealand Football Championship and reached the final of the OFC Champions League, where Coombes scored a goal but couldn't prevent his side from losing 2-1 to Auckland City.
Return to Waitakere
Coombes spent the 2014/15 season with WaiBOP United before returning to Waitakere United for the 2015/16 season and beyond.
International Career
Coombes represented the New Zealand under-20 team and participated in the 2002 OFC U-20 Championship, where they finished second in their group. On March 3, 2010, he made his debut for the New Zealand senior team in a friendly against Mexico at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, playing the first 54 minutes of the match. Despite being considered for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he ultimately did not make the squad.
Personal Life
Outside of football, Coombes is a physical education teacher at Rutherford College in Auckland. He enjoys participating in activities such as snowboarding, golf, and fishing.
