Chantal Jouanno: From Karate Champion to Minister and Politician
Early Life and EducationChantal Jouanno was born into a family of teachers in Paris. She began practicing karate at the age of seven and went on to become a 12-time French champion in karate-kata, an artistic form of the martial art.
Jouanno also pursued her education, earning a BTS in international trade, a Master's degree in economics and public administration, and graduating from the École nationale d'administration in 1999.
Career in Business and Public Administration
After completing her studies, Jouanno worked in the export division of Citroën before moving to EDF in 1994. She held various leadership roles, including heading Nicolas Sarkozy's cabinet in the General Council of Hauts-de-Seine and the Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME).
Entry into Politics
In 2009, Jouanno was appointed State Secretary for Ecology in the second cabinet of François Fillon. She was elected to the Île-de-France regional council in 2010 and became Minister of Sports in the third cabinet of Fillon.
Ministerial Tenure and Senate Election
Jouanno served as Minister of Sports until 2011, when she was elected to the French Senate from Paris with the support of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP).
European Parliamentary Bid and Withdrawal from Politics
In 2014, Jouanno ran unsuccessfully for the European Parliament as part of a joint list between the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI) and the Democratic Movement (MoDem). She subsequently left politics in 2017, resigning from the Senate and the Île-de-France regional council.
Return to Public Service and Personal Life
In 2018, President Emmanuel Macron appointed Jouanno as Chair of the National Commission for Public Debates. Jouanno is married to Hervé Jouanno and has three children: Sibylle, Com, and Sixtine.
