Family and Early Career
Jacques d'Agar, a French painter, was both the father and teacher of Jean d'Agar. In 1682, Jean followed his father into exile in London and then Copenhagen, where d'Agar senior became a court painter.
Return to London
In 1691, Jean d'Agar returned to London, where he established himself as a prolific portrait painter. However, due to his frequent lack of signatures, many of his works were erroneously attributed to his more renowned contemporary, Sir Godfrey Kneller.
Attribution and Legacy
As a result of the misattribution, Jean d'Agar's contributions to the art of portraiture have often been overlooked. However, research and stylistic analysis have gradually revealed his work, shedding light on his considerable talent and influence on the London art scene of his time.
