Charles Thomson Rees Wilson: A Biography
Charles Thomson Rees Wilson was an English physicist and the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927. He was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his method of making the paths of electrically charged particles visible by condensation of vapour."
Early Life and Education
Born on a farm near Glenkirk, Scotland, Charles Thomson Rees Wilson was just four years old when his father passed away. His family then moved to Manchester, England, where they received significant support from relatives. Wilson attended the Owens College (now the University of Manchester) and developed an interest in the natural sciences while attending the Owens College Academy. He had a particular fascination with preparing specimens for microscopic observation. In 1884, with the financial assistance of his stepbrother William, he entered Owens College and studied science for three years, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1887. He remained at the college for an additional year to study philosophy, Latin, and Greek.
Career and Achievements
In 1888, Wilson enrolled at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, with the help of a scholarship. While initially planning to study medicine at Owens College, he had become convinced that his true calling was physics. After obtaining his degree from Cambridge in 1892, he stayed there to conduct scientific research.
During a vacation in 1894, while climbing Ben Nevis, a mountain peak in Scotland, Wilson became captivated by optical phenomena, such as rings around the Sun, which occur when sunlight passes through clouds and mist. This experience sparked his scientific investigations. In early 1895, he began attempting to reproduce these phenomena in the laboratory. In 1899, he conducted research for the Meteorological Council, and the following year, he was elected a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College and appointed as a lecturer.
In 1913, Wilson was appointed a Meteorological Physics Observer at the Solar Physics Observatory in Cambridge, where he remained until 1918, continuing his research with his cloud chamber and studying atmospheric electricity. From 1923 onwards, he primarily focused on studying atmospheric phenomena, inventing instruments to measure the total charge carried by lightning and other characteristics of thunderstorms. From 1925 to 1934, he held the position of Professor of Natural Philosophy at Cambridge.
In 1927, Wilson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his method of making the paths of electrically charged particles visible by condensation of vapour." He retired from Cambridge in 1934 and returned to Scotland, settling near his birthplace. Throughout his life, Wilson had a deep love for nature, and even in his eighties, he continued to climb mountains and take long walks in the countryside. He presented his final paper on thunderstorms to the Royal Society in 1956, becoming the oldest member of the society.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1907, Wilson married Jesse Fraser Dick, the daughter of a minister, and they had two daughters and a son. Charles Thomson Rees Wilson passed away on November 15, 1959, at his home in Carlops, near Edinburgh.
In addition to the Nobel Prize, Wilson received numerous accolades and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Hughes Medal (1911), the Royal Medal (1922), and the Coplée Medal (1935) by the Royal Society in London. He also received the Hopkins Prize from the Cambridge Philosophical Society (1920), the Gunning Victoria Jubilee Prize from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1921), and the Howard Potts Medal from the Franklin Institute (1925). He was knighted in 1937 and held several honorary scientific degrees.
